Spotted Mini Collection

Posted in Dresses, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on August 3, 2017 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I have been making dresses for a client and I finished them all! This time I made the polka dot Summer dresses, same style but different colours.

I haven’t made anything like these before but I pretty much knew how to. Figuring out how to finish the armholes and hem splits were the tricky parts (I should have taken close up pics on the splits…damn!)

Here’s my “mini collection”!

This is the first one I made which I used as a template for the others.

I had some difficulty about how I would attach and finish the neck tie. I could have tucked in the edges but I liked the rough-ish look, also the former would take longer to execute.

I made this one longer as my client says it’s more elegant, I agree.

I have a smaller size of this one to finish off, its cute on but I’m not sure if I’ll keep it.

This one is my favourite, it’s cute yet spooky looking, like a middle aged version of Kreepsville. This wouldn’t look out of place at a Halloween party (believe me when I say I can make this work!) I may have to make myself one of these now…

She’s ecstatic with these and she’s planned where and when to wear them already. Yes, I am making more dresses for her but I’m having a little break. I may make the odd thing or two for myself though

Stay busy

Sassy in Stripes

Hi All,

Some how, in between sewing for my client, I’ve managed to whip up something from the left over material from one dress.

It is basically a straight tube when laid flat like so:

This has four holes in it, two for the arms to go through, one for your head and another for your torso… just thought I should explain that

I had a few ideas for these pieces before sewingg them, such as centre pieces for bodycon dresses. I sew a LOT of dress so I decided on this crop top!

This is an outfit I’d actually go out in… but where? The chip shop thats where! Do I really need an excuse?

Hat: H&M, Top: MontanaDesigns, Trousers: Forever 21

In these next photos I’m wearing them with black pleated trousers

Trousers: H&M in Prague

Here I flipped the top upside down so it’s more flowy at the top, I would attach straps and thread a string throughout the hem to create gathers

You could wear this with a bra or bikini top as an extra feature or support, there are many ways this can be worn.

I’ll be selling this one but I’ll be making another for myself as I like this so much!

Now it’s back to it

Wrapped In Silver

Posted in Dresses, Sewing with tags , , , , , , on June 5, 2017 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

My collection is on hold while I’m sewing (FIVE) dresses for a client, don’t worry she’s great and I’m more than happy to sew for her. I was working on the first one for most of today, she’s so happy with it she’s been paying me in cake and ice cream.

Before this I made myself a wrap dress using yet another tutorial I found on Pinterest. It’s for a black/silver/gold themed family birthday party. I couldnt be bothered to search for something to buy so I used this as an excuse to buy more fabric.

I’ve been meaning to make a wrap dress for a while, especially using this tutorial as it looked straight forward. I was right!

Now to show you my working out and my final answer:

These were posted on my Snapchat, I like to show what I’m making on there, amongst the goofery (montanastrange).

I added gold lace pieces along the neckline because I wanted it to look classy and dressy.

I’m happy with the results and it fits really well, I’ve bought the same fabric in red and purple to make more (I’ll be making a wrap top in the purple fabric).

I’m looking forward to wearing it, I’ll try to updated this post with me out in it.

Happy Crafting,

Jigsaw Cardigan

Hi All,

I thought my outfit today deserved to be shared and it’s about time you met my Jigsaw Cardigan.

I matched it with my handkerchief skirt dress I also made… I should really make another one already.

Featuring my African print triangle bag, will post soon

I got the idea when I began knitting it, I like to buy my yarn in bits and pieces rather than in bulk (I’m not sure why, to create the illusion of saving money as well as space?. I thought “why not use different shades of purple and differing textures too?”

I wanted to knit this particular cardigan in black for years after asking my mom to do it. I’m happy with the final garment but I was looking for buttons to add, I was thinking maybe different shades of the same button but now I’m not sure that I want any

I hope you’re all having a good Me Made May!

Disco Dress

Hi All,

My mom (S) requested I make a dress for her as she wanted something new to wear to a family function. What she asked for was simple enough, so simple I made sewn it before I went to work the same day… so around 1\2 hours.

I went with her to source the fabric at our town centre market, cut around an old dress she bought from Primark. S wanted an A line, swing type shape so I cut diagonally as wide as I could from the underarm to give a fanned out shape. I used google images and Pinterest to make sure it was a tried and tested method.

S also wanted an asymmetrical hem. After a fitting she pinpointed how high up she wanted the slant to start and decided she liked the look of the unfinished edges on the neckline, sleeves and the hem. The chosen fabric is a printed knit that doesn’t roll or fray so it looked very neat.  This made an easy project more simpler which is always good for me!

I was asked to cut a head scarf from remaining fabric but it turned out to be too short to tie properly, more fabric was needed! I managed to attach two pieces to each end of the scarf to fix this problem.

Here’s the end result

S said it was a comfortable fit and she liked that she was able to wear a matching head wrap to tie in her outfit, so much so that she wants a similar dress. Currently on the hunt for fabric.

‘Til next time!

Baggy Trousers

Hi All,

Back in the summer my mom wanted me to make a few harem pants as I have a pair myself from American Apparel. In total I have made three in different shapes (I don’t have pics), they turned out well so ill be making some for myself.

As per usual I searched Pinterest for sewing patterns and tutorials, for the harem pants I’m posting here I used a pattern similar to this.

This is how my version turned out, my mom chose the fabric. She all for colour and patterns!

harem

This was a quick make like most of the others which was convenient because I was working a lot. Thinking back to it I’m wondering how I managed to fit any sewing in between work and sleep!

I will try to get photos of the other pairs I made, (I think will be wearing them more often) plus photos of some I have on my list to make.

Until next time!

Just Keep Swimming

Posted in Miscellaneous, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 19, 2016 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I’ve had a very looong hiatus from WordPress/blogging but never fear as I have been sewing. Its just fitting it into work and finding the energy to do anything creative, I think I’ve got my sewing mojo back.

I’m really pleased with my latest make as its my first swimsuit, I’m more pleased as its a refashion and I found it on Pinterest! So this is a Pinterest win… bonus!

I’ve wanted to make a bikini or swimsuit for some time now, I’m going on holiday soon so that’s a good excuse! I’ve a few pairs of knickers to practice different styles which have turned out well. It turns out that making them is good for using scraps (I’m planning on using some old t shirts for bikinis, see how that turns out).

I came across the above video on how to refashion a swimsuit from leggings, I was intrigued and thought “it can’t be too hard” it wasn’t! Some of the work is done for you.

Here’s how my version turned out:

It fits well and it looks classic/timeless… I’m not bragging just surprised it was so easy and looks great. I’m trying out a few bikini styles to see what works on me but I will be buying a few too as I’ve been telling myself I don’t have to make everything.

I think I’m on a roll so there will be more from me, happy crafting!
