Stained Glass Overcoat

Posted in Cardigan/Jumpers, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 21, 2017 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I have just finished this bright and chirpy overcoat!! I’m happy with it but it’s one of those garments that I’m not sure where to wear it to, that’s if I don’t sell it on Depop (@montanastrange). Then again I do have a random collection of clothes, I’m leaning towards keeping this one to myself.

If you have followed me long enough, you may remember that I have used this sewing pattern (M6084) twice before (excuse my fat face) but as thick coats.

This unlined overcoat is part of a collection. I haven’t come up with a name yet… Afro Punky and Tribal Goth come to mind but I’m still undecided.

Here is photographic evidence *Law & Orders dun duns sound effects*

I look so mischievous

Basking in evil glory

Lace cuff detail

Featuring my odd Doc Martens, they got a lot of attention today. I had my picture taken for a bridal challenge due to these, glad I could help!

I’m thinking about adding pockets because: 1) FUNCTIONAL!

2) I don’t like chucking things into my bag and

3) there’s so many ways to attach them

I don’t really want them traditionally sewn so to speak. Would it be odd to place them unevenly? Say one way higher than the other? I am the one designing it sooo anything goes I guess!

Happy sewing!

Jigsaw Cardigan

Posted in Cardigan/Jumpers, Dresses, Knitting, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 13, 2017 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I thought my outfit today deserved to be shared and it’s about time you met my Jigsaw Cardigan.

I matched it with my handkerchief skirt dress I also made… I should really make another one already.

Featuring my African print triangle bag, will post soon

I got the idea when I began knitting it, I like to buy my yarn in bits and pieces rather than in bulk (I’m not sure why, to create the illusion of saving money as well as space?. I thought “why not use different shades of purple and differing textures too?”

I wanted to knit this particular cardigan in black for years after asking my mom to do it. I’m happy with the final garment but I was looking for buttons to add, I was thinking maybe different shades of the same button but now I’m not sure that I want any

I hope you’re all having a good Me Made May!

Glitzy Flowers

Posted in Dresses, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on May 12, 2017 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,
I sewn yet another dress for my mom for a birthday party, the theme was black, gold and silver.

We hunted around The Fancy Silk Store and she found what she was looking for (eventually)!

I altered another dress I made using McCalls M6465 and flared it out, cutting it free handed.

Here the result

I made a matching tote bag but she stuffed it so much the handles ripped!

This fabric was fun to work with, it also cane in gold if anyone is interested.

Happy crafting!

Ankara Print Collection

Hi All,

I know it’s been a very long time since I have posted on here but I have been very active!

I post everything I make on my Instagram (@montanastrange) now! I’m setting up a new business account (@montanadesignz) there too in the mean time.

I’ve decided to make a bold collection using bright and bold African prints and mixing them with delicate lace and sheer fabrics. I have also added chunky knits to the mix, I’m liking the clash they make so far.

Here is what I have so far (this will be photo/video heavy)

The above pics re showing handkerchief/circle top pinned to my mannequin. Heres the finished product

This is me wearing it

Next up is the long shorts!

I’ve put in a waistband and worn them but I want to attach frills on the hems before I show them finished. Not sure whether to use the same fabric or a lace/sheer version instead.

I cannot wait to show you this piece as it’s my favourite!

Did you see I attached a red lace frill on the cuffs! So cute, that what I want to do to the shorts with a wider piece. It’ll be more exaggerated

Last but not least is a pattern I made up, my Chunky Crop! My pattern instructions are on my Ravelry

There’s a video on my Instagram that shows it’s true glory, not enough space to upload it here, sorry!

I started this collection because I was invited to the Young Designer Awards, only to find out that I needed an Avante Garde entry. I haven’t done that for a while but it drove me to make whatever I wanted, I know this isn’t Avant Garde but I am working in some pleats and frills here and there haha

I really do hope this has made up for my absence, I’ve moved house about 3 times and the laptop isnt working. I was thinking to pack this in too, I couldn’t leave so I’m posting this via my phone.

All the best, stay creative!

Primary Coloured Cardigan

Posted in Cardigan/Jumpers, Knitting with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 21, 2014 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

While I’ve been sewing loads of projects, I’ve been knitting a brightly coloured v neck cardigan which seems to have taken two life times to finish. I have done it but I need to attach the buttons I bought this week.

As most of you know, I don’t do bright colours at all (besides red) for some reason, I saw this yarn and wanted to  make something cool with it. I wasn’t sure I’d like it or if I’d end up wearing it, well I thought there’s no harm in having one colourful cardigan. PlusI invested so much time into it I grew to like it.

Here I wore it with my Drape Drape dress, it matches the blue in this cardigan!

I like how light weight it is and it effortlessly brightens up all the black outfits I have, I can take it off and look moody again, which is great. I got buttons to match each colour (I had to repeat some) which it a cute touch, it saves me deciding which colour to pick.

This will match with most of my wardrobe as 1) it’s mostly black; 2) I have a few red and blue items and 3) it’s cute and unusual.

I have most of a 100gm ball left so I thought mittens could be my next knitting project. I want to make a crew neck version of this in a purple and green yarn similar to this, it looks like punk so I want it!

More crafting to come!

Hemlock Tee Joins A Cult

Posted in Sewing, Tops with tags , , , , , , on September 16, 2014 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I mentioned in my last post that I was making another Hemlock Tee (free pattern) as I had a lot of fabric left from making that swing top.

Like before, it didn’t take long to sew at all, but as it’s not as stretchy as the jersey it requires the sleeves are a little snug. I think it’ll be nice to wear on colder nights with an oversized cardigan and skinny jeans.

A striped version would look nice, the creator of this pattern has made one and it looks cool.

Bare with me as the pictures aren’t that good, I have been meaning to take these for a week now but life!

Hemlock Front

You can see the shape and the pattern ok but I guess I should have held on to take better pics. I really want to make a dress version of this, I said this last time but I haven’t got around to it yet.
Hemlock Side

Due to the rigidness of the fabric it came out slightly smaller than my original one, I don’t mind that as it’s kept it’s shape and it fits over my head.

Hemlock Back I really like this fabric, it looks kinda spooky and mysterious. Just in time for Halloween too! I have more daring clothes than this to celebrate though if I’m do get up to anything!

Square Skater

Posted in Dresses, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , on September 3, 2014 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I have made three (and a half) skater dresses altogether and I want to make more, I can’t get enough of them! They are quick to sew, comfortable to wear and I can change the style/cut of it slightly so it looks different each time I make one.

I think this one is my favourite so far, although I like them all as I’ve made them, but this one is colour blocked and has a square skirt also known as a handkerchief skirt.

I used the same pattern I used for my other skaters, I free hand cut the skirts from my waist measurements for each one.

Here’s the evidence!

I cut the slightly lower so it sits lower on my waist

I decided to make contrasting sleeves like those raglan t shirts. I also contrasted the back to the front so it would be easier to see which way round to wear it without looking at the neckline.

I like how changing the shape of the skirt can make this look so different.

I have been meaning to make a square skirt skater for a long time, I just ended up making other things and forgetting about it. I still need to cut a skirt for one more skater (that’s why I said half before), I want  square shape for that one but with the points in the front and back.

I really like this dress and needless to say I did get a few looks when wearing it, one woman recoiled in horror and told her friend to look. They weren’t my type of crowd haha! Plus, if I wore what everyone else did I wouldn’t be me and I certainly wouldn’t be happy. I like standing out!
