Spotted Mini Collection

Posted in Dresses, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on August 3, 2017 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I have been making dresses for a client and I finished them all! This time I made the polka dot Summer dresses, same style but different colours.

I haven’t made anything like these before but I pretty much knew how to. Figuring out how to finish the armholes and hem splits were the tricky parts (I should have taken close up pics on the splits…damn!)

Here’s my “mini collection”!

This is the first one I made which I used as a template for the others.

I had some difficulty about how I would attach and finish the neck tie. I could have tucked in the edges but I liked the rough-ish look, also the former would take longer to execute.

I made this one longer as my client says it’s more elegant, I agree.

I have a smaller size of this one to finish off, its cute on but I’m not sure if I’ll keep it.

This one is my favourite, it’s cute yet spooky looking, like a middle aged version of Kreepsville. This wouldn’t look out of place at a Halloween party (believe me when I say I can make this work!) I may have to make myself one of these now…

She’s ecstatic with these and she’s planned where and when to wear them already. Yes, I am making more dresses for her but I’m having a little break. I may make the odd thing or two for myself though

Stay busy

Toad dress

Posted in Dresses, Sewing, Tops with tags , , , , , , , , , , on October 11, 2014 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I have sewn another stretch dress, this time using Burda 7520. I’ve called this the Toad dress in honour of Toad from Super Mario, he’s the same colour and he’s cute like this dress! I’m glad I picked this up from the swap at Sew Brum as it was a very quick sew and it looks a lot better than I thought it would.

The fabric I used is also from the meet up, I didn’t know what I was going to make from it at the time but it was cute and I like polka dots.

It’s a shame that summer is over as I want to wear this, in fact, I was about to wear it today but J advised against as he didn’t want to draw attention (most of my clothes do, so I thought Id give him a break). If I was to wear this at this time of year, I’d just layer up… which reminds me! I’ve come across this Japanese style called Mori that involves layering brown and grey dresses with white doilies (scroll through Pinterest). It looks cute and easy to recreate, so that’s on my to-do list now!

Back on track! Here is photographic evidence of Toad.

Front

This is a very simple make with a simple shape, it’s the fabric that makes it stand out plus they match my converses!

Front 2

I could see my sister in this as this is her style, slightly figure hugging and cute. I’ll be making a more subtle one for myself when I get the fabric, I like to make more than one of each pattern as I’m getting good use from it and I get my moneys worth. If I drafted it then thats a bonus, it shows that my pattern works!

Side

You’re probably wondering about the large holes at the bottom here, I was too as I’m still not sure if I’ve seen them right. I left them as they are and did the magic below.

Top

Place your arms through them and it can worn as a top! I know the wrong side of the fabric is showing when worn like this but this is a demonstration, I didn’t think about wearing it like this. I’ll pay more attention to the fabric when I sew this again.

Optical Illusion Dress

Posted in Dresses, Sewing with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 25, 2014 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

I made a pullover dress from a cotton poplin with a polka dot pattern, I originally wanted to use it for shorts but then I realised that I’d look better as a dress. I’ve named this post the Optical Illusion dress as that’s what J says it looks like, as it hurts your eyes.

I have used the pattern before, I used it twice for dresses for my mom and once more for myself.

Here’s the new addition to the M6465 clan!

Oh, photo credits to J by the way, I wasn’t aware this was taken. I like this photo.

I notice I look moody in most if the photos on this blog (not on purpose, it’s how my face is) so I thought I’d go slightly kooky.

I’m showing there’s decent wriggle room 🙂

I liked sewing this as I didn’t have to refer to the pattern to make sure I was doing things “by the book” because 1) it was simple and

2) I’ve used this pattern 3 times already

I’ve started sewing neater with none stretch fabric for the past few months as I have started slowing things down (it could be the new sewing machine too), I don’t need to be in a rush to make things. I think from my college days, I was in a rush most of the time to get things finished.

I like this dress because of it’s Aline shape and cute polka dots. My mom likes it so much she wants another one -_-.

I’m guessing I should keep this pattern a little longer

My “1 Hour Skirt”

Posted in Sewing, Skirts with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 21, 2014 by MontanaDesigns

Hi All,

It’s been a while since I last posted on here, I’ve been too tired to make/finish anything so I have kept to my routine of quick and easy makes.

I have looked back at my online to-do list via Kollabora.com as I wanted to make yet another skirt but more feminine this time. I remember the 1 hour skirt and I thought I’d give it a go as it looked simple enough.

Here are photos of mine before I hemmed it.

This skirt actually would have taken me an hour if I did it all in one day, I started it yesterday and left the hemming ’til today as I started it late. I also had to shorten the elastic in the waist as it looked huge when it on.

If I have any scraps large enough I’ll make some more. I do have some heavy satin fabric but I was waiting for the right dress to use it plus I’m not sure it’ll be suited to this type of skirt.

I’ll do my  research and decide later.
